One of the rules I gave to the Kaiju designers is, I wanted to think how a man in a suit would fit in there. The spirit and feeling of the classical Kaiju, we are keeping them mostly two legged, not humanoid but sort of a silhouette that reminds you of those classical ones […] The first way you can do scale is context. Within the Kaiju itself, the texture, when you look close, you see what looks like a scale and then you go closer and there’s a bunch of bumps and cracks that give you the scale. If you do a close up in a six foot, seven foot, eight foot tall monster, you never get that close, you never get the sense of texture that you get with a Kaiju. - Guillermo Del Toro

Watch this rare oarfish sighting

AMAGAD OARFISH WHAT

Incase you didn’t know oarfish are very long deep sea fish that rarely if ever come to shallow water; if they do it’s usually because they’re about to kick the bucket.

kinda sad that they only are seen when they’re dying though.

What’s extra freaky is that in their natural habitat, they spend most of their time hovering straight up and down rather than swimming horizontally like we see here and expect from most other sea creatures.

There are other deep sea fish who swim that way, and anglerfish who swim completely upside down. Things get weird in a weightless void of total darkness.

It is speculated that these guys are the cause of many of the sea monster legends~

From above water it looks like a river dragon. Or is that just me?

After so many years of disliking centaurs for being impractically designed, I thought of a design that actually makes them look like functional organisms! And now I love them!!!

Their hands have two thumbs, and can be used in walking and running just like the other limbs. The smaller centaurs have dexterous toes on all of their limbs, but in the higher weight classes, gripping ability on the back four legs is sacrificed in order to better support the body while standing. The central limbs are set wider than the fore and hind limbs to prevent collision when all six are being used in locomotion.

i must draw one of these practical taurs Immediately

This is one of the most heart stopping videos I have ever seen, and felt the need to share this onto my blog. Terry Tufferson jumped off a cliff (The Manly Jump Rock as it is known) in Sydney Harbour, Australia, and landed right next to a great white shark! All filmed while he wore a GoPro.

HOLY SHIT.

this is scary as hell

fuck that id just start crying.

A reminder that “male” armour usually works just as well with female bodies. If you’re trying to design something practical, useful and historical looking (or even just something the follows the laws of physics), never ever put in boob cups. Aside from the fact they give the armour a sort of “focus point” for swords, falling down on them would send the shock right into the sternum. Regular plate armour leaves enough space between the chest for small to medium sized boobs anyway. But say the girl underneath is a buxom lass, you can still avoid that cleavage, boob cup shape while leaving enough space for her melons.

But aside from plate, things like the top picture, chainmail and all sorts of leather armour are unisex. I know you might be thinking that the feminine thing to do when designing a female warrior is to show off a bit of thigh or neck or cleavage or something, but really, understand that if the goal of that armour is to protect completely, putting an obvious gap in it is a terrible idea and she’ll surely get stabbed very quickly.

And don’t feed me the “it’s magic, I don’t got to explain shit” line. Bollox. Magic armour and forcefields need to make some sense too. Show me something that LOOKS like it’s generating a barrier over the character instead of just saying “Oh the G-string of Invulnerability is just as good as wearing full plate anyway”. If that’s the case, everyone would wear it. And why can’t they just tie it around their belt? Make me believe that your magic armour and spells have logic to them. If not, please don’t play your world straight. I’m all for super stylised designs as long as they’re sold as such, but if you’re trying to make a world that feels real enough for people to believe and get immersed in, think this stuff out. If you’ve designed someone with sparse, gapped armour that shows skin, give your character a reason to wear it.

Just going to add that armor with major gaps in the defense (like arms, legs, and neck) did exist historically, and it was either a matter of economics or technological advancement, and, in some cases, personal preference.

The above is a good general place to start from, though I will go into possibilities for appropriate and sensible sexing of armors in a future post.

i have a lot of feelings about female armor

God I love llamalar armor.
